Ibiza has the beats and Mallorca has the bars, but Menorca is where you’ll find the heart of the Balearic islands. Villages of terracotta-tiled houses stud the hills, historic cities hug the coast and the long, languorous shoreline is dotted with thriving fishing villages as well as resort-thronged beaches. Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman conquerors imported the tradition of thermal baths, hammams and herbal massages to the islands, and Menorca’s spas are still going strong today.

The Thalis Spa at S’Hotelet des Born hints at Roman and Ottoman indulgence, with a pool tucked into a stone-walled chamber and bespoke treatments based on locally cultivated rosemary, lavender, almonds, olive oil, citrus fruit and aloe vera. The interior feels more like a hacienda than a hotel, with billowing white drapes, handmade furniture and natural wood lending an organic quality to the suites and bathrooms. A prime location in the historic heart of Ciutadella only adds to the appeal.

It’s steps from the Catedral de Santa Maria de Ciutadella, but it still feels private, peaceful and exclusive thanks to the secluded garden and pool. Staying here would be therapeutic even without the spa, set in a natural grotto beneath the hotel, with a stone-roofed pool, steam room and sauna.
